DIVISION INFORMATION: The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments. DESCRIPTION OF WORK: This position reports directly to the Building Superintendent or Maintenance/ Construction Technician III and provides general housekeeping duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, removal of trash, cleaning windows, cleaning restrooms and general policing of the facility. This position is also responsible for performing light maintenance work such as changing light bulbs, painting, finishing drywall, cleaning roof drains, care of grounds to include mowing, raking, removing unwanted brush, assisting in cleaning entrance roadsides, and assisting with groundskeeping tasks where needed. Tasks include setting up chairs and tables, attending to special lighting and decorative needs, preparing area, cleanup, resetting timers for nighttime events, etc. These events and meetings occur both during and after hours. This includes loading and unloading or assisting with loading and unloading of packages and supplies. Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays; possess a valid driver's license, lift and carry 75 lbs. and be able to work with strong chemicals. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Experience with housekeeping (such as office, business, or commercial cleaning). TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Education and/or experience in the performance of a variety of manual tasks that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade equivalent to one year of experience. The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, located 20 miles south of Wilmington, NC, in Kure Beach, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear River. A living collection of over 2,700 animals in 93,000 ft2 of exhibit space attracts and engages over 440,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is surrounded by protected woodland, marsh, and beach. Visitors often plan to stop at sites adjacent to the Aquarium - Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and historic Fort Fisher Civil War Museum. Description of Work: This position will work under the supervision of the Husbandry Curator and will report directly to the Assistant Husbandry Curator. This position will provide daily maintenance and care of native and landscape plants on the Aquarium grounds and in exhibits that are used for aesthetic, education, research, and conservation purposes. Primary responsibilities include: Care of existing gardens (watering, weeding, mulching, pruning and plant replacement). Creation of new planted areas. Greenhouse care, pond care. IPM and standard pest control. Educational interaction with the public. Position/Physical Requirements: Must be able to work in hot, humid, and wet conditions. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to climb ladders. Must possess a valid driver’s license. KSA/Job Requirements: Experience caring for plants in a professional situation (garden center, propagation facility, research facility, etc.). Must possess basic knowledge of herbicide and pesticide use. Minimum Education and Experience: High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience as related to knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
