The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, located 20 miles south of Wilmington, NC, in Kure Beach, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear River. A living collection of over 2,700 animals in 93,000 ft2 of exhibit space attracts and engages over 440,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is surrounded by protected woodland, marsh, and beach. Visitors often plan to stop at sites adjacent to the Aquarium - Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and historic Fort Fisher Civil War Museum. Description of Work: This position will work under the supervision of the Husbandry Curator and will report directly to the Assistant Husbandry Curator. This position will provide daily maintenance and care of native and landscape plants on the Aquarium grounds and in exhibits that are used for aesthetic, education, research, and conservation purposes. Primary responsibilities include: Care of existing gardens (watering, weeding, mulching, pruning and plant replacement). Creation of new planted areas. Greenhouse care, pond care. IPM and standard pest control. Educational interaction with the public. Position/Physical Requirements: Must be able to work in hot, humid, and wet conditions. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to climb ladders. Must possess a valid driver’s license. KSA/Job Requirements: Experience caring for plants in a professional situation (garden center, propagation facility, research facility, etc.). Must possess basic knowledge of herbicide and pesticide use. Minimum Education and Experience: High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience as related to knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
